Many different, reasonable goals for medical care exist. Often, more than one goal exists. Curative and comfort oriented goals can coexist.
Possible goals include:
cure
prolongation of life
physical comfort
psychological well-being
the chance to achieve spiritual well-being
settling relationships
achieving a personal goal.
Negotiating goals for care takes skills including:
identifying the patient's and family's goals
understanding and adjusting to the patient's culture
assisting the patient and family in identifying reasonable goals
conveying prognosis
setting limits
managing care when the patient lacks decision-making capacity
